SUMMARY:Beyond Headlines - Sustainability and the Media
DESCRIPTION:As sustainability has become part of public discourse and headlines\, this is a double-edged sword with its own challenges. Companies especially face increasing pressure to strike the right balance: how do you communicate your sustainability efforts without falling into the traps of greenwashing or greenhushing? \nAnd as if that wasn’t challenging enough\, the realities of climate change and intricacies of sustainability issues usually are very complex and can easily lead to polarisation in media. \nThis was a dynamic and engaging evening featuring perspectives from national media\, communication agencies\, and multinational corporations. Together\, we explored the complexities of climate storytelling\, corporate responsibility\, and the media’s influence on driving real change. \nKey Questions Discussed: \n\nHow can companies communicate their sustainability initiatives transparently and credibly?\nWhat role does the media play in holding companies accountable while inspiring action?\nHow can we identify and avoid the pitfalls of greenwashing and greenhushing?\nWhat are the emerging trends in sustainability communication\, and how are audiences responding?\nHow can media and businesses collaborate to create an impactful\, solution-focused climate narrative?

SUMMARY:Retail Finance & Impact Investing
DESCRIPTION:Individual investors are increasingly considering the impact of investments and aligning portfolios to their values. Indeed\, a Deloitte survey of retail investors found that 78% consider sustainability an important aspect. However\, several challenges still remain\, such as navigating regulations\, inherent complexity for consumers\, transparency & greenwashing risks\, and the lack of standard ESG metrics. \nAt this first GreenBuzz finance event of the year\, participants gained insights into the latest retail investment trends\, strategies\, and technologies\, as well as how investors\, banks and asset managers can capitalise on the growing demand for sustainable investment opportunities. \nKey Questions Discussed \n\nWhat is the current consumer appetite for financial products that prioritize sustainability?\nHow can retail banks better communicate the impact of their financial products to customers?\nWhat metrics can be used to measure the success of retail financial products in achieving impact goals?\nWhat regulatory or systemic changes are needed to make retail financial products more impact-oriented?\nHow can technology enhance the transparency and uptake of impact-driven retail finance?

SUMMARY:Networking Event Series: Investing in Water
DESCRIPTION:[German Version Below] \nThis event was part of our Networking Event Series powered by Innosuisse. \nFor a long time\, water has been somewhat overlooked as carbon and net-zero journeys have dominated the headlines. But the tide is turning\, with this most fundamental resource gaining greater attention. Indeed\, COP28 committed to “drive water up the climate agenda\,” something reflected in investments too\, with water steadily moving from niche to mainstream. \nAs we dedicate an event to this crucial topic which affects us all\, we will look at: \n\nWhat are the current trends and challenges in the water sector?\nWhat are the long-term prospects for water investments in the face of global megatrends like urbanization\, population growth\, and climate change?\nHow can water infrastructure in Switzerland and globally benefit from investment?\nWhat vanguard technologies are helping address water challenges?\n\nThis event is tailored for investors\, asset managers\, sustainability professionals\, policymakers\, water tech entrepreneurs\, and anyone interested in understanding the opportunities and challenges associated with investing in water. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to gain insights from industry experts\, network with like-minded professionals\, and explore how investing in water can drive both financial returns and positive environmental impact. \n“It’s time to treat water like we treat carbon. The time for action on carbon has been widely and successfully accepted. The time for action on water is now.” \n– Jay Famiglietti\, executive director of the Global Institute for Water Security (GIWS) \n\nDiese Veranstaltung war Teil unserer Networking Event Series powered by Innosuisse. \n– Jay Famiglietti\, geschäftsführender Direktor des Global Institute for Water Security (GIWS)

SUMMARY:Networking Event Series: Sustainable Portfolio Strategies
DESCRIPTION:[German Version Below] \nThis event was part of our Networking Event Series powered by Innosuisse. \n“Firms that adopt responsible social and environmental practices become more resilient\, which helps them avoid crises and bounce back from shocks. They have lower financial volatility\, higher sales growth\, and higher chances of survival over a 15-year period; yet\, we were unable to find any differences in short-term profits.” Ortiz-de-Mandojana\, N.\, & Bansal\, P. (2016).  \nWith good reason\, sustainable investing has been on the rise\, with an increasing number of investors incorporating ESG factors into their decision-making processes. However\, the surge in sustainable investing is accompanied by challenges\, including backlash on ESG clarity and the broad definition\, highlighting the delicate balance in addressing medium to long-term global issues within the sustainable investment landscape. Despite these challenges\, there’s been tremendous growth in the underlying building blocks you can use to build a sustainable portfolio with attractive options for all types of investors. \nThe question remains: What defines a sustainable portfolio\, and how do we navigate the balance between fixed income\, equity\, and alternative investments? \nJoin us as we seek the answers to these questions and more. \nDiese Veranstaltung war Teil unserer Networking Event Series powered by Innosuisse.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Climate Change & Biodiversity Loss - How do we tackle both?
DESCRIPTION:It is time to put biodiversity back on the agenda again! Join us and WWF on February 28th\, 2023\, to discuss this important issue.\n\n\nBiodiversity loss has been pushed out of the global agenda by climate change\, even though both issues are closely linked\, have similar impacts on human welfare and need to be tackled urgently\, together. \nIn fact\, the architects of the Paris Agreement say: “There is no pathway to limiting global warming to 1.5C without action on protecting and restoring nature. Only by taking urgent action to halt and reverse the loss of nature this decade\, while continuing to step up efforts to rapidly decarbonise our economies\, can we hope to achieve the promise of the Paris Agreement.” (The Guardian; November 2022) \nIn their Living Planet Report (2022)\, WWF found that there has been a catastrophic average decline of 69% in species populations since 1970. “A million plant and animal species are threatened with extinction\, we have lost half of the world’s corals and lose forest areas the size of 27 football fields every minute.” This is alarming\, as we are highly dependent on a thriving natural ecosystem to provide us with our essential human needs\, such as food\, clothing\, medicine etc. \nIt becomes clear that\, just like in the case of climate change\, businesses need to care about biodiversity. There are immense risks attached to an ever warming planet and biodiversity loss. At the same time\, this dual crisis should not be reduced to just a discussion about risk. Right now\, businesses have the opportunity to have a positive impact on both the climate and biodiversity regeneration! \nAt this event\, we therefore want to get to the bottom of questions like: \n\nHow are climate change and biodiversity loss interconnected? \nHow can they be tackled together\, as a dual crisis? \nWhat’s the role of businesses\, and why should they care? \n\nSo\, it is time to put biodiversity back on the agenda again! Join us and WWF on February 28th\, 2023\, to discuss this important issue.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Networking Event Series: ESG vs. Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of the Networking Event Series powered by Innosuisse. \nWe are inviting you to join us in addressing the question: ESG vs. Sustainability – Are we measuring the right things? \nIn less than 20 years\, the ESG movement (Environmental\, Social & corporate Governance) has grown from a corporate social responsibility initiative – launched by the United Nations in 2006 – into a global phenomenon. Representing more than US$30 trillion in assets under management by 2018 (GreenBiz)\, it is expected that ESG assets will rise to more than 50 trillion US$ by 2025 (Bloomberg) – more than a third of the $140.5 trillion in projected total assets under management. \nWhile the uprising of ESG criteria isn’t under question\, it’s important to understand the relationship between ESG and Sustainability. Even though some are using the terms ESG and sustainability nearly interchangeably\, this isn’t always possible or useful and can cause confusions. One example of the controversy surrounding this topic was the recent Tesla-exclusion from the S&P 500 ESG Index\, which led to a lot of discussions and open questions we want to address: \n\nDo the aspects environmental\, social and governance describe the sustainability of a company sufficiently?\nDo we need to weigh some aspects more than others?\nShould we include other variables?\nWhich existing frameworks (for both ESG and sustainability) do we use\, and how could they be improved?\nCan sustainability even be reduced to a clear set of variables?\n\nWe look forward to two short inputs to spark the discussion by: \n\nMahendra Gunasekera\, Senior ESG officer\, responsAbility\nAurelia Figueroa\, Global Head of Sustainability\, Breitling\nModerated by Philipp Staudacher\, SDG evangelist\, radicant bank\n\nJoin us at responsAbility for this event to better understand the connection between ESG criteria and sustainability and discuss the question: “Are we measuring the right things?”

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Thematic Event: EU Taxonomy & Greenwashing
DESCRIPTION:“Green” investment products are on the surge\, and the trend is growing. As sustainable investing moves to the new normal\, we discuss how the EU taxonomy has provided the necessary framework to help investors evaluate the environmental impact of their investments. \nThe EU taxonomy is part of the EU Action Plan that includes a number of new sustainable finance regulations and seeks to flow capital to more sustainable businesses. It was introduced in June 2020 to drive ESG criteria into investment decisions. \n“If it works properly\, the EU taxonomy will help determine the sustainability of all activities and stop financial players falsely labeling unsustainable investments as climate-friendly. The taxonomy’s classification should inform public and private investment decisions\, and it is a new powerful tool to make the EU economy environmentally and socially sustainable.” – writes Sébastien Godinot\, Economist at the WWF European Policy Office\, in this article in March 2020. \nTherefore\, the desired effect is to protect both investors and companies against accusations of greenwashing and to provide a cohesive framework to assess investments and loans. So\, more than a year after the EU taxonomy has come to effect\, let’s ask: \n\nHas the EU taxonomy really helped tackle greenwashing in finance?\nWhat are the plans to fully incorporate all ESG measures?\nWhat has been the impact on reporting systems\, due diligence processes and investment strategies?\nHow has the Swiss financial system responded?\nHave we moved from good disclosure to channeling funds to more sustainable businesses?\nHave consumers benefited from the clarity?
