SUMMARY:Scope 3 Event Series: Beyond Borders - Protecting human rights in global supply chains
DESCRIPTION:With more than 450 million people working in supply chain-related jobs\, it is crucial that we address the environmental and social impacts associated with complex global supply chains. The current globalized economy requires businesses to source goods and services from suppliers that often span multiple countries with radically different legal\, regulatory\, and environmental practices. While these complex supply chains provide economic and social development opportunities\, they also pose significant environmental and social risks that many companies have been unable to effectively mitigate (United Nations Global Compact Progress Report 2019).\nThe UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and other international norms for companies are not legally binding\, and many companies have inadequate or no human rights due diligence measures in place. However\, there have been significant developments in this regard. The EU Parliament recently approved the highly anticipated Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD). This directive is expected to be transposed across the EU in the next couple of years\, and will require companies to conduct due diligence on human rights and environmental-related issues in their operations and supply chains\, across various areas. Non-compliance with this directive can lead to substantial financial and criminal consequences\, as well as civil liabilities for damages caused by human rights or environmental issues.\nThe event will address key questions such as: \n\nWhat does the CSDDD mean for businesses?\nWhat are the challenges faced by companies in implementing human rights due diligence?\nHow can these challenges be overcome?\nHow are asset managers navigating these potential risks?\nHow can companies\, international organizations\, governments\, and civil society organizations work together to promote responsible supply chain practices?\n\nScope 3 is not only about emission reduction but also about addressing the broader environmental and social impacts associated with global supply chains.\n\n\nProgramme:\n\n\n\n18:00 – 18:30\nRegistration\n\n\n18:30 – 18:45\nWelcome by GreenBuzz & moderator Camilla Leopoldino (Vontobel)\n\n\n18:45 – 18:55\nSpeaker Input by Rachel Brooks\, Head of Executive Education at the University of St. Gallen (CSI-HSG) \n\n\n18:55 – 19:05\nSpeaker Input by  Daniel Vaughan-Whitehead\, Founder of the Fair Wage Network\n\n\n19:05 – 19:15\nSpeaker Input by Ally Wong\, Sustainable Investing/ ESG Researcher at Robeco\n\n\n19:15 – 19:45\nModerated Q&A*\n\n\n19:45 – 21:30\nApéro and Buzzing!\n\n\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Thematic Event: Loss & Damage Fund - A step towards climate justice?
DESCRIPTION:Those who contribute the least to greenhouse gas emissions often end up bearing the brunt of climate impacts. This is why\, for many\, the “loss and damage” caused by climate change is at its heart an issue of climate justice. \nClimate justice is more than a moral issue. It is an economic issue. \nAt COP27 in November 2022\, a Loss and Damage (L&D) Fund was established to help those most affected by the climate crisis. This fund is dubbed a historic achievement by many and a critical step towards achieving our Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ensuring climate justice. \nThe L&D Fund is designed to provide financial support to vulnerable communities and countries that are disproportionately affected by the climate crisis. This includes those who are suffering from extreme weather events\, sea level rise\, and other climate-related disasters. By providing financial support\, the fund will help these communities to recover and build resilience to future climate impacts. \nWe will be joined by speakers from finance\, Swiss Youth for Climate\, and business\, who will be sharing their perspectives on these important questions: \n\nHow should companies be held to account for Loss and Damage?\nWhat criteria will be used to determine which countries are eligible for funding?\nWhat types of activities will be supported by the Loss and Damage Fund?\nWhat measures can be taken to ensure that funds are used appropriately and not misappropriated by governments?\n\nThis event is brought to you in collaboration with the One Planet Lab. \nThe Loss and Damage Fund is a critical step towards achieving our SDGs and ensuring climate justice. We hope you can join us to discuss the importance of this fund and how we can ensure its success. \n\n–

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Thematic Event: Future of Food - How to feed 8 billion sustainably?
DESCRIPTION:By 2050\, we will have to feed 10 billion people\, and our current food systems are not up to the challenge. While demand is ever-increasing\, resources are in decline. It is a vicious cycle that is further exacerbated by unsustainable agricultural practices and food systems that have negative effects on biodiversity\, the environment and our health. \nBut what has to change in order to achieve a more sustainable food system? \nA recent article by Prof. Robert Finger from the World Food System Center (WFSC) of ETH Zurich\, outlines the most important fields of action to make the food system more sustainable. These include avoiding waste\, increasing efficiency\, closing cycles and replacing and improving current practices. \nTechnological advancements will certainly help. For example\, precision fermentation needs 1\,700 times less land than even the most efficient agricultural means of producing protein available today. However\, food is deeply rooted in our cultures\, so change will be difficult to achieve. Therefore\, we need to start discussing solutions now and turn them into reality. \nJoin this event and learn more about the challenges in our food system and concrete actions to make it more sustainable. \nOur speakers will focus on the areas highlighted in the above report. \n6 Key areas: \n\nAvoid Waste\nIncrease efficiency\nReplace and improve\nFight the cause not the symptoms\nClose cycles\nPromote acceptance and sustainable behaviour\n\n\n–

SUMMARY:Thematic Event: COP27 - Let’s talk about solutions!
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, thousands of representatives from business\, government\, academia and NGOs from all over the world meet to discuss climate change at COP (Conference of Parties). Previous COPs led to the Kyoto Protocol\, which was signed in 1997\, and the Paris Agreement of 2015. Both agreements had a significant influence on climate protection and are cited regularly in regulations\, policies and carbon reduction goals from companies. \nWhile we must not neglect the successes of the past COPs\, there are also some frustrations. For example\, critical voices say that COPs are usually over-represented by industries who have large carbon footprints\, that there is a lack of attendees from the Global South and that the fact that any final measures must be agreed upon by consensus leads to very conservative compromises\, in short: we need more action and less talk. \nThis year’s COP\, which takes place from 6-18th November in Egypt\, has four focus areas: Mitigation\, Adaptation\, Finance and Collaboration. We are hopeful that the discussions will lead to concrete actions. \nQuestions we will discuss include: \n\nWhat was decided at COP27?\nWhat changes will this bring to governments and businesses?\nWhat are possible solutions and paths forward for climate change mitigation\, adaptation and sustainable finance and collaboration?\nWhat do we need from COP28?

SUMMARY:Thematic Event: Employee Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:The mental health of employees is a core piece to a company’s sustainability. As such\, it represents an important pillar in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) because\, as the World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledges\, “there can be no health or sustainable development without mental health.” In fact\, Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 promotes good health & well-being at all ages. This means that any company that aims to be(come) sustainable needs to address this issue. \nExternal stressors\, such as the COVID pandemic and the war in Ukraine\, have worsened the global mental health crisis. Additionally\, individuals are more and more aware of global challenges like climate change\, hunger\, inequality\, which can lead to increased anxiety and overall deteriorating mental health. \nEmployees with good mental health are more likely to stay at a company. 22% of staff leaving organisations cite mental health reasons for doing so\, this rises to 77% for Gen Z employees (2019 Mental Health at Work Report). So for productivity and also retention it is vital that mental health is prioritised. \nBut what are some of the measures companies can take? For example\, they can make sure to create a supportive culture that is free from stigma and encourages employees to seek help when needed. They can train supervisors who recognize the warning signs of workers that may be struggling with mental health and to direct them to the appropriate support systems. And there are many more steps companies can take.

SUMMARY:Informal Drinks: SDG16 in Times of Conflict - Should it matter to business?
DESCRIPTION:“There is no sustainability without peace\, and no peace without sustainability.” – Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 16) \nFollowing the outbreak of war in Ukraine\, we said that GreenBuzz would examine the link between war & sustainability and why promoting positive peace is so important. \nOn September 8th\, we will therefore host informal drinks to talk about different forms of peace\, and what it implies for politics\, businesses and society. We will use SDG 16 as a starting point for this discussion and why it should matter to business. \nMilitary conflicts have a severe impact on the environment\, society and economy\, causing massive destruction and suffering in the regions affected. At the end of 2021\, the total number of people worldwide who were forced to flee their homes due to conflicts\, violence\, fear of persecution and human rights violations was 89.3 million\, the highest level recorded by the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) in almost seven decades. \nWhat can businesses do to ensure they do no harm in regions they operate in? Should weapons be included in sustainable investments? We are joined by Dr Evelyn Dietsche who heads the Business & Peace programme of Swisspeace and Rachel Whittaker Head of Sustainable Investment Research\, Robeco to provoke an interesting discussion\, moderated by Marie Froehlicher. \nBut even in the absence of war\, the arms industry\, maintenance of armed forces and their training place an enormous burden on the environment. \nInterestingly SDG 16 includes the greatest number of targets (16) of all the 17 SDGs\, it also entails the least implementation measures (2) to achieve it. Why is that? And why is it so difficult to develop concrete steps of action in this regard? What is the role of peace in sustainable development\, and is it being talked about enough?

SUMMARY:Thematic Event: The Sharing Economy - Moving Beyond Ownership
DESCRIPTION:The sharing economy has been part of our everyday lives for over a decade and it shows no signs of slowing down. In a world where goods are readily available and people have long associated identity with ownership\, many are now turning to a different form of asset utilisation. \nThanks to technology\, the internet and apps\, few of us think twice today about stepping into a stranger’s car\, staying in someone else’s home or even sharing our clothes. However\, whilst the notion of sharing our assets in exchange for money or other goods and services is mostly more efficient and sustainable and makes economic sense for the beneficiary\, the speed at which the sharing economy has taken off and disrupted traditional rival industries has created its own challenges. \nSustainability could be the big winner\, with far more efficient resource utilisation. How do we grapple with the following questions and speed up the adoption of sharing? \n\nWhat is the legal liability for companies promoting sharing models?\nWhat is the insurance industry doing to adapt?\nCan we shift the mindset fast enough for mass adoption of sharing?\nIs sharing always the most sustainable option?\n\nWe will explore a wide range of different products\, services and business models that all fall under the banner of the sharing economy along with their opportunities\, risks and the considerations for future development. \nGuest speakers will include: \n\nEllen Berner\, Sustainability Business Partner at IKEA Switzerland\nAnita Kirchberg\, Leader Sales & B2B at Mobility\nIvo David Kuhn\, COO at Sharely\nSophie Ribaut\, Associate at Kellerhals Carrard\n\nDuring the Apéro we will have an exhibition to showcase inspiring entrepreneurs using a sharing model in their business model. Including: \n\nShare a look\nSugar Cup\nLoopi\nGaia Children\nSwapaBEE

SUMMARY:Thematic Event: Sustainable Construction - Buildings Meet the Circular Economy
DESCRIPTION:We spend most of our time inside and depend on buildings to provide these environments for us. However\, we have little to no influence over how the buildings we live in are built. So we have to rely on the companies that construct them to consider sustainable practices and innovations. \nUnfortunately\, sustainability and circular economy aren’t top priorities in the industry yet\, as the following numbers demonstrate. \nConstruction… \n\nis the world’s largest consumer of raw materials with more than 3 billion tons or raw material and almost 50% of global steel production\nis the largest contributor of waste responsible for 84% of the waste in Switzerland\nemits more than 30% and 40% of global and EU GHG emissions respectively\nconsumes up to 40% of all energy\n\nThis shows why transforming the construction industry will be an important building block in achieving sustainability\, and implementing circular models will play a big role in this. \nCircularity aims at keeping the value of a material or product in the value chain as high as possible\, for as long as possible. It keeps finite natural resources in use and minimises waste. In the building industry\, the circular economy drives development of new sustainable materials\, reuse of existing materials\, innovative building designs\, tools and systems and more. \nDuring our event\, we will discuss ongoing initiatives and innovations that are being developed in Switzerland. Our speakers will elaborate on what needs to be done to accelerate the transition of the building industry to a circular system\, away from the linear model that is largely being used today. \nThe key questions we will discuss include: \n\nWhat are the main barriers to the transition towards a circular economy in the building industry and how can we overcome them?\nHow can we reduce the volume of new materials required for construction and maximize the reuse of valuable existing material?\nWhat are inspiring lighthouse projects and initiatives in Switzerland?
