SUMMARY:Informal Drinks: SDG16 in Times of Conflict - Should it matter to business?
DESCRIPTION:“There is no sustainability without peace\, and no peace without sustainability.” – Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 16) \nFollowing the outbreak of war in Ukraine\, we said that GreenBuzz would examine the link between war & sustainability and why promoting positive peace is so important. \nOn September 8th\, we will therefore host informal drinks to talk about different forms of peace\, and what it implies for politics\, businesses and society. We will use SDG 16 as a starting point for this discussion and why it should matter to business. \nMilitary conflicts have a severe impact on the environment\, society and economy\, causing massive destruction and suffering in the regions affected. At the end of 2021\, the total number of people worldwide who were forced to flee their homes due to conflicts\, violence\, fear of persecution and human rights violations was 89.3 million\, the highest level recorded by the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) in almost seven decades. \nWhat can businesses do to ensure they do no harm in regions they operate in? Should weapons be included in sustainable investments? We are joined by Dr Evelyn Dietsche who heads the Business & Peace programme of Swisspeace and Rachel Whittaker Head of Sustainable Investment Research\, Robeco to provoke an interesting discussion\, moderated by Marie Froehlicher. \nBut even in the absence of war\, the arms industry\, maintenance of armed forces and their training place an enormous burden on the environment. \nInterestingly SDG 16 includes the greatest number of targets (16) of all the 17 SDGs\, it also entails the least implementation measures (2) to achieve it. Why is that? And why is it so difficult to develop concrete steps of action in this regard? What is the role of peace in sustainable development\, and is it being talked about enough?

SUMMARY:Excursion: Tour Through The Circle - Switzerland's Largest Green Building
DESCRIPTION:The Circle at Zurich Airport meets the highest environmental standards for construction and operation. It is not only LEED Platinum certified but also fulfils Minergie standard – join us at this tour through Switzerland’s largest green Building and see what is possible! \nThe building sector\, especially in Switzerland\, carries a great responsibility in our journey of decarbonisation\, accounting for 23.9% of Switzerland’s GHG emissions (BAFU\, 2020). Certifications and labels can be a useful tool in the transition to a greener building sector. \nLEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the internationally best-known building label. A successful LEED certification confirms that a building has been developed\, planned and realised according to measurable sustainable aspects. Although various established building labels are available in Switzerland\, interest in LEED on the part of building owners\, investors and planners has increased significantly in recent years. There are now LEED-certified buildings in over 150 countries around the world – and The Circle is one of them! Minergie is another important standard in Switzerland that is becoming increasingly recognised globally. The Circle is Switzerland’s largest Minergie certified building – it is a standard that leads the way to net zero energy systems in buildings and fossil-free operation. \nThe Circle features a compact footprint of just 30\,000 m². Heating and cooling needs are met with energy stored in underground thermal storage units\, while energy and water consumption are minimised through energy recovery. The photovoltaic installation on the roof of the building harnesses another source of natural energy.\nAround the building\, a nature based approach has been used to promote biodiversity in the area and create and maintain important low moorlands which are of national importance. \nJoin us on September 15th on a tour through The Circle and an additional discussion with Danai Tamvakera (LEED AP)\, Project Lead at Amstein+Walthert\, to learn more fascinating background information about the LEED Certification and this state-of-the-art energy efficient building!

SUMMARY:Networking Event Series: Pensions\, Sleeping Giants?
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our Networking Event Series powered by Innosuisse. \nPension funds in Switzerland manage around 1\,350 billion Swiss francs (Klima-Allianz). Without getting much attention\, pension funds are among the largest and most influential investor groups and can steer the companies in which they invest. So join us to talk about these sometimes seemingly “sleeping giants” with the potential for tremendous impact. \nWhile some pension funds have already started making their investments more sustainable\, the majority still invest in fossil fuels and other non-sustainable technologies . Furthermore\, most pension funds lack transparency\, making decision making harder. For over 1\,200 pension funds\, managing around 300 billion of assets\, there isn’t any data publicly available about their investment portfolios. \nFortunately\, there is movement in different pension funds. While some smaller pension funds have been pioneers in sustainable investments for decades\, due to the pressure of different stakeholders others are also starting to move in the right direction\, trying to be in line with the Paris Agreement. \nAt this event we will discuss the current situation of pension funds in Switzerland and understand the options pension funds have to invest more sustainably as well as the possibilities of companies and individuals for impactful long-term pensions. \nKey questions for discussion will include: \n\nWhat does a sustainable pension fund look like?\nWhat are pension funds doing to ensure their investments are sustainable?\nHow do pension funds align sustainable investments with their duty of protecting the retirement funds of their members?\nWhere are the hurdles of pension funds investing more sustainably on a large scale?\nWhat can be done on the client side to steer pension funds into a more sustainable direction?\n\n– \nDie Pensionskassen in der Schweiz verwalten rund 1.350 Milliarden Schweizer Franken (Klima-Allianz).
