SUMMARY:Thematic Event: Cryptocurrency & Sustainability - A Contradiction in Terms?
DESCRIPTION:Switzerland has been one of the leading players in the global adoption of tokenized digital assets and Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT). With people being able to use cryptocurrency to pay anything from a restaurant visit to their taxes the possibilities seem endless. But with all the opportunities that these digital currency alternatives seem to present\, we ask ourselves – how sustainable are cryptocurrencies? \nElon Musk turned this question into a hot topic when Tesla suspended Bitcoin saying: “We are concerned about rapidly increasing use of fossil fuels for Bitcoin mining and transactions\, especially coal\, which has the worst emissions of any fuel. Cryptocurrency is a good idea on many levels and we believe it has a promising future\, but this cannot come at great cost to the environment.” \nCome to this event to discover and discuss: \n\nThe amount of energy being consumed by cryptocurrencies\nWhy some cryptocurrencies are more energy efficient than others\nThe volatility of cryptocurrencies\nIf cryptocurrency can be a lever for a more fair society\nThe ethics of cryptography

SUMMARY:Networking Event Series - Excursion to Polestar
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our Networking Event Series – Towards Net Zero powered by Innosuisse. \nWe are delighted that Polestar are exclusively opening their doors to GreenBuzz to share with us their journey towards net zero and the concrete actions that they are already taking. \nFollowing the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)\, businesses are expected to introduce new regulations to reduce CO2 emissions more than ever. They find themselves in a race against time to meet the ‘Net Zero’ target. \nThe stakes could not be higher. By limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees\, it is understood that the most harmful effects of climate change may be mitigated. How well companies adapt to the new guidelines will be critical to reaching the 2050 goal. \nSo let’s take a closer look at Polestar who are committed to net zero by accelerating the change to a fully electric\, climate-neutral future. We will hear what concrete actions they are taking\, how they are leading technological development and embracing circular models. And that’s not all\, with their pioneering work they are hoping to inspire the rest of the automotive industry to move in the same direction and are not afraid to raise their voice for what they believe is right. \nYou can look forward to some short expert input\, looking at the newest Polestar models and even having the possibility to test-drive their e-cars! Of course\, we will also have an apero for you.

SUMMARY:Thematic Event: Sustainable Construction - Buildings Meet the Circular Economy
DESCRIPTION:We spend most of our time inside and depend on buildings to provide these environments for us. However\, we have little to no influence over how the buildings we live in are built. So we have to rely on the companies that construct them to consider sustainable practices and innovations. \nUnfortunately\, sustainability and circular economy aren’t top priorities in the industry yet\, as the following numbers demonstrate. \nConstruction… \n\nis the world’s largest consumer of raw materials with more than 3 billion tons or raw material and almost 50% of global steel production\nis the largest contributor of waste responsible for 84% of the waste in Switzerland\nemits more than 30% and 40% of global and EU GHG emissions respectively\nconsumes up to 40% of all energy\n\nThis shows why transforming the construction industry will be an important building block in achieving sustainability\, and implementing circular models will play a big role in this. \nCircularity aims at keeping the value of a material or product in the value chain as high as possible\, for as long as possible. It keeps finite natural resources in use and minimises waste. In the building industry\, the circular economy drives development of new sustainable materials\, reuse of existing materials\, innovative building designs\, tools and systems and more. \nDuring our event\, we will discuss ongoing initiatives and innovations that are being developed in Switzerland. Our speakers will elaborate on what needs to be done to accelerate the transition of the building industry to a circular system\, away from the linear model that is largely being used today. \nThe key questions we will discuss include: \n\nWhat are the main barriers to the transition towards a circular economy in the building industry and how can we overcome them?\nHow can we reduce the volume of new materials required for construction and maximize the reuse of valuable existing material?\nWhat are inspiring lighthouse projects and initiatives in Switzerland?

SUMMARY:Networking Event Series - Towards Net Zero
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our Networking Event Series powered by Innosuisse. \nThe latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has once again made it clear that we must act collectively now to prevent the worst consequences of climate change. As governments around the world introduce new regulations to reduce CO2 emissions\, businesses are expected to follow suit. They find themselves in a race against time to meet the ‘Net Zero by 2050’ target. The stakes could not be higher. By limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees\, it is understood that the most harmful effects of climate change may be mitigated. How well companies adapt to the new guidelines will be critical to reaching the 2050 goal. \nA recent study suggests that over 20% of the world’s largest public companies have committed to net zero. And the majority of those companies also have interim targets\, a published plan and a reporting mechanism in place for their commitments. However\, the study also indicates that the “net zero commitments assessed varied hugely in their quality and only 20% met the minimum set of robustness criteria\, or ‘starting line’\, as set out by the UN Race to Zero Campaign.” \nThe study leaves some open questions such as: Are the commitments enough? What can we learn from our past successes and failures? What are the greatest hurdles to overcome  to achieve net zero? What reporting standards can we align to? \nMany in our GreenBuzz community are striving towards the same goal of achieving net zero. At this event we will discuss: \n\nScience aligned targets\,\nfollowing a decarbonising strategy\,\nmeasuring and reporting on their progress.\n\nWe invite our speakers and audience to learn from each other\, share insights and make connections that can elevate the work that is being done to a speed that will meet our climate targets.  As a take away from this event\, you will have a clearer idea on tackling your net-zero goals.

SUMMARY:Informal Drinks - Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
DESCRIPTION:Carbon capture and storage (CCS) refers to a range of technologies that combat climate change by reducing the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2). The idea behind CCS is to capture the CO2 combustion of fossil fuels before it escapes into the atmosphere\, transporting it\, and eventually storing it. \nNew questions arise: What should/ will happen to the captured CO2? Can such technologies create a false sense of security in some people\, a deceptive way out of impending behavioral changes? Are CCS technologies facilitating greenwashing? \nJoin us for these Informal Drinks on November 4th to discuss these and more questions relating to carbon capture and storage technologies\, the opportunities connected to them but also their limitations. \nAt this event\, you will hear a short input by Liesbeth Deddens\, Product Marketing Manager at Climeworks to give you some food for thought. Afterwards\, you are invited to simply mingle and have a drink with us and the GreenBuzz community.

SUMMARY:Thematic Event: Digitalisation - Climate Killer or Climate Protector?
DESCRIPTION:Technology will continue to transform our lives\, and the growth of businesses will depend upon it. Digitalisation has seen a huge jump triggered by the Covid crisis. Millions of businesses around the world have transformed and digitized at a hyper pace. But where there’s light there’s usually dark\, too. So what are the good and the bad sides of this megatrend? \nAs digitalisation is developing rapidly\, so is the demand for energy and valuable resources. The power for our smartphones\, streaming services and social networks has so far mainly come from fossil fuels. Some estimate that in just a few years\, the digital industry will cause more carbon emissions worldwide than all motorised traffic. In fact\, it already accounts for 4% of global carbon emissions. \nBut technology doesn’t have to be a climate killer. It can also be used as a force for good\, and digitalisation can substantially help in promoting climate change mitigation. For example\, digital solutions enable the shared economy\, help curb emissions that would otherwise happen through business trips or make agricultural practices more efficient and sustainable. \nSo on the occasion of Digital Day Switzerland 2021\, we are asking how digitalisation can be a force for good\, a driver for innovation\, and go hand in hand with sustainability instead of harming the environment. \nWe will hear from industry leaders and sustainably-oriented entrepreneurs who are all working towards making Switzerland a notable digital innovation hub.
