SUMMARY:Networking Event Series: Investing in Water
DESCRIPTION:[German Version Below] \nThis event was part of our Networking Event Series powered by Innosuisse. \nFor a long time\, water has been somewhat overlooked as carbon and net-zero journeys have dominated the headlines. But the tide is turning\, with this most fundamental resource gaining greater attention. Indeed\, COP28 committed to “drive water up the climate agenda\,” something reflected in investments too\, with water steadily moving from niche to mainstream. \nAs we dedicate an event to this crucial topic which affects us all\, we will look at: \n\nWhat are the current trends and challenges in the water sector?\nWhat are the long-term prospects for water investments in the face of global megatrends like urbanization\, population growth\, and climate change?\nHow can water infrastructure in Switzerland and globally benefit from investment?\nWhat vanguard technologies are helping address water challenges?\n\nThis event is tailored for investors\, asset managers\, sustainability professionals\, policymakers\, water tech entrepreneurs\, and anyone interested in understanding the opportunities and challenges associated with investing in water. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to gain insights from industry experts\, network with like-minded professionals\, and explore how investing in water can drive both financial returns and positive environmental impact. \n“It’s time to treat water like we treat carbon. The time for action on carbon has been widely and successfully accepted. The time for action on water is now.” \n– Jay Famiglietti\, executive director of the Global Institute for Water Security (GIWS) \n\nDiese Veranstaltung war Teil unserer Networking Event Series powered by Innosuisse. \n– Jay Famiglietti\, geschäftsführender Direktor des Global Institute for Water Security (GIWS)

SUMMARY:Built to last? Product longevity and repairability in Switzerland and beyond
DESCRIPTION:“Our economy is built on the assumption of endless growth. But when we take a closer look at the underlying resources\, we realise that this is unsustainable. We need to design products with their end of life in mind and create systems that make repair and reuse not just possible but desirable.”  \n– Kate Raworth \nIt’s now widely recognised that humanity’s throwaway and consumerist culture is profoundly unsustainable\, and that a shift towards durable and repairable products is a necessity. Of course\, with many challenges and systemic inertia to overcome\, how feasible is such a transformation?  \nThis is precisely the question we will tackle at this joint event between GreenBuzz and One Planet Lab as part of the Tsüri.ch circularity month. We will draw on perspectives from other countries to see how Switzerland can learn best repairability practices from elsewhere. Expect to hear of exciting innovations and companies who are already building in longevity from the ground up\, as well as policies and regulations which can promote this from top-down. Finally\, we will look at incentives\, jobs and skills needed to connect the dots and ensure success.  \nWhether you are already heavily involved in the topic or keen to learn more\, come and be part of the conversation.

SUMMARY:Thematic Event: Can Winter Sports Events Be Sustainable?
DESCRIPTION:As winter approaches\, excitement builds towards another winter sports season – but for how much longer? As weather and snowfall become more unpredictable\, this cornerstone of Swiss winters will face more challenges moving forward. \nOutdoor winter sports events are impacted by climate change\, but at the same time offering a powerful platform to influence wider sustainable practices and behaviours. On 28 November\, we brought together key stakeholders in outdoor winter sports to address questions including: \n\nWhat is driving the environmental footprint of outdoor winter sports events? How does this footprint compare to that of other sports and entertainment products?\nWhat can stakeholders do to advance environmental sustainability of outdoor winter sports events? How can a constructive dialog be initiated and maintained?\nWhat is the role of corporate sponsorship in ensuring a positive impact?\nHow sustainable are winter sports events/locations in the face of climate change – and how can they become more environmentally friendly?\nWhat can be the sustainable legacy of sporting events?\n\nThis was an engaging discussion that explored the powerful intersection of sports and environmental responsibility.

SUMMARY:Networking Event Series: Rethinking Corporate Ownership
DESCRIPTION:[German Version Below] \nThis event was part of our Networking Event Series powered by Innosuisse. \n“The law gives me the absolute right over this company. The law gives me the right to take everything. But I feel that is not right. It doesn’t all belong to me. It also belongs to employees and society.” – Ernst Abbe\, Founder\, Carl Zeiss Foundation \nIn a time of unprecedented change\, is it time to reassess the very idea of corporate ownership? \nIn this stimulating event\, we explored how restructured ownership can help build a future-oriented and sustainable Swiss economy. We looked at alternative models such as steward ownership\, a fast-growing international movement with many success stories. \nProminent examples range from innovative startups as Crowd Container\, outdoor retail companies like Patagonia to industry-leaders as Bosch. \n\n\nData even shows that steward-owned companies are more durable and even more profitable\, and mission-driven organisations can maintain their identity and independence. \nWith speakers from various standpoints\, we explored some fundamental questions including: \n\nWhat is ownership\, and what does its future look like?\nWhat is the relevance of ownership to responsible business practices and the New Economy?\nHow can succession through alternative forms of ownership be sustainably structured\, and address social responsibility and skilled labour shortages?\n\nThis was a thought-provoking evening looking at how companies can pivot towards purposeful and people-centric ownership. \n\n—– \nDiese Veranstaltung war Teil unserer Networking Event Series powered by Innosuisse.

SUMMARY:Beyond Headlines - Sustainability and the Media
DESCRIPTION:As sustainability has become part of public discourse and headlines\, this is a double-edged sword with its own challenges. Companies especially face increasing pressure to strike the right balance: how do you communicate your sustainability efforts without falling into the traps of greenwashing or greenhushing? \nAnd as if that wasn’t challenging enough\, the realities of climate change and intricacies of sustainability issues usually are very complex and can easily lead to polarisation in media. \nThis was a dynamic and engaging evening featuring perspectives from national media\, communication agencies\, and multinational corporations. Together\, we explored the complexities of climate storytelling\, corporate responsibility\, and the media’s influence on driving real change. \nKey Questions Discussed: \n\nHow can companies communicate their sustainability initiatives transparently and credibly?\nWhat role does the media play in holding companies accountable while inspiring action?\nHow can we identify and avoid the pitfalls of greenwashing and greenhushing?\nWhat are the emerging trends in sustainability communication\, and how are audiences responding?\nHow can media and businesses collaborate to create an impactful\, solution-focused climate narrative?

SUMMARY:Climate Justice & Corporate Leadership: Transforming Global Supply Chains
DESCRIPTION:As companies navigate increasing pressure to make their supply chains more sustainable\, one crucial element is often overlooked: climate justice. But what does this mean in a business context\, and why should companies care? \nSimply put\, climate justice is about ensuring that the burden and opportunities of the consequences of climate change are distributed fairly – especially between companies in the Global North and communities in the Global South\, where many supply chains begin. This event\, co-hosted by GreenBuzz\, öbu and WWF Switzerland\, explored how businesses can align their sustainability strategies with fairer\, more responsible supply chains – while also managing risks\, staying ahead of regulations\, and strengthening their market position. \nWe discussed key challenges\, such as: \n\nHow climate change disrupts supply chains and creates new financial risks.\nThe negative externalities of global supply chains—who is paying the price?\nHow companies can turn sustainability into an advantage instead of just a compliance issue.\n\n\n\nThrough real-world case studies from different industries\, such as food and manufacturing\, we highlighted companies already making progress and show how others can take practical steps to integrate climate justice into procurement\, legal\, and sustainability strategies\, in order to guarantee a liveable environment for all and for future generations

SUMMARY:Circularity Summit 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Circular Economy is more than a response to environmental challenges—it’s a transformative vision for the future of business and society. By embracing new ways of designing business and society\, circularity addresses critical issues like material scarcity\, and resource depletion to avoid waste to landfill\, maximize use\, and create products that last long and can be used several times. \nSwitzerland (and Zurich) is positioning itself at the forefront of the circular transition. However\, challenges such as supply chain vulnerabilities\, evolving regulations\, and shifting societal expectations require collective action. The Circularity Summit 2025 in Zurich brought together thought leaders\, pioneering businesses\, and policymakers to explore how circular strategies can strengthen industries\, enhance resource efficiency\, and build a more sustainable future. \nWe examined the topic from three key perspectives: products\, business models\, and consumers: \n\nHow can companies redesign their business models to reduce waste and optimise resource use while remaining competitive?\nHow can product and service design prioritise durability\, repairability\, and recyclability?\nWhat policies or incentives effectively accelerate the adoption of circular economy principles?\nWhich industries stand to benefit most from circular practices\, and what challenges are unique to their sectors?\nHow can businesses and policymakers support consumers in adopting circular behaviors?\nWhat tools and metrics are needed to measure and communicate circularity’s impact?\n\n\n\nBreakout Sessions: \nCircular Products \nHow are you designing products that extend life cycles\, minimise waste\, and keep materials in continuous use? This session explored strategies for durability\, modularity\, and recyclability\, along with innovative end-of-life solutions that close material loops. \nCircular Business \nRethinking business models is essential to shifting from a linear to a circular economy\, but what strategies enable this transition? This discussion explored service-based approaches\, digital tools\, and reverse logistics that help businesses enhance resource efficiency\, unlock new value\, and build long-term resilience. \nConsumer Circularity \nConsumers play a crucial role in making circular systems work\, but how can businesses encourage and support more sustainable behaviours? This discussion explored how companies can design products\, software\, and solutions that actively enable their customers to participate in circularity. \nFocus of Panel Discussion: \nCreating a truly circular economy requires collaboration across industries\, from product design to business operations and consumer engagement. This panel brought together experts to discuss practical strategies\, challenges\, and opportunities for embedding circularity at every stage of the value chain\, ensuring materials remain in use and waste is minimized.

SUMMARY:Afrotopia? Visions of a Sustainable Future
DESCRIPTION:By 2050\, Africa is projected to be home to 13 of the world’s 20 largest cities and will have the youngest population globally. This demographic and urban growth offers not just challenges\, but enormous potential — especially if the continent can chart its own sustainable development path. \nInstead of repeating old models of development rooted in dependence and extraction\, a new vision is emerging — one grounded in homegrown innovation\, sustainable business\, and local ownership. Africa has the opportunity to leapfrog fossil-fuel dependency and embrace climate-smart technologies\, circular solutions\, and resilient infrastructure — on its own terms. \n\n\nThe concept of Afrotopia put forward by Felwine Sarr challenges outdated narratives. \nThrough keynotes\, panel discussions\, and project showcases\, we explored the shift: \n\nFrom deficit to potential\nFrom aid to investment\nFrom imposed solutions to self-determined futures\n\nWe heard from on-the-ground innovators\, Swiss-Africa partnerships\, and emerging market investors who are co-creating Africa’s sustainable future. The future is being written now\, and it demands a new narrative.

SUMMARY:From Crisis to Resilience: Financial Strategies for Sustainable Economic Empowerment
DESCRIPTION:Traditional aid programmes often fall short in addressing the long-term economic challenges faced by vulnerable communities. How can we move beyond short-term relief to financial strategies that empower individuals and foster lasting economic stability? \nGreenBuzz\, in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and responsAbility\, brought together experts to discuss financial approaches that enhance resilience and self-sufficiency and foster long-term economic security. \nThis event examined how the private sector and the development and humanitarian sector can support both crisis preparedness and long-term economic empowerment. By bridging gaps and leveraging the comparative strengths of both worlds\, we can create sustainable opportunities that strengthen local economies and reduce dependency on external support. \nWhy This Matters \nMillions of people remain financially vulnerable\, while traditional funding structures often prioritize short-term needs over long-term solutions. At the same time\, economic\, environmental\, and geopolitical crises are becoming more frequent and prolonged\, putting additional pressure on already weak financial systems. \nBy shifting the focus to inclusive financial models\, risk mitigation\, and local investment\, we can enable communities to take control of their financial futures. The financial sector\, development organizations\, and investors have a unique opportunity to reshape how capital flows into underserved economies\, fostering self-sustaining and resilient communities. \n\n\nKey Discussion Areas \n\nPathways to Economic Self-Sufficiency – How can inclusive financial tools drive long-term economic stability?\nDisaster Risk Financing & Climate Resilience – How can financial instruments help communities prepare for and recover from climate-related shocks?\nInvesting in Local Economies – What role can private investment and innovative financial models play in empowering local businesses and entrepreneurs?\nShifting the Financial Paradigm – How can we move from donor-dependent models to scalable\, locally led financial systems that foster the long-term economic security of vulnerable populations?

DESCRIPTION:Around the world\, scientists are engaging in climate justice and species protection beyond their labs and academic positions. In April 2022\, hundreds of them in 30 countries blocked government buildings\, glued themselves to streets\, and chained themselves to the fences in front of the White House. \nFernando Racimo\, evolutionary researcher and professor at the University of Copenhagen\, collects first-hand accounts of scientists’ civil disobedience in his book. He combines personal stories with interviews from frontline activists\, offering insights into the world of research and resistance\, and examining the challenges academics faced after their uprising. \nThe author also reflects on his own role in the movement and the path that led him to become a scientist-activist. \nThe reading (in English) was a call to view science as an active force for societal change. \n\n\nAbout “films for future“: The film festival aims to raise public awareness of environmental and sustainability issues. Over 50 films\, including premieres and international productions\, were shown in November 2022 and 2023 as well as at around 160 events. The events take place in various cinemas and locations in Zurich\, some of them with panel discussions with speakers. A total of 13\,255 people attended the events in 2022 and 2023\, many of which were sold out.
