SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Thematic Event: Future of Food - How to feed 8 billion sustainably?
DESCRIPTION:By 2050\, we will have to feed 10 billion people\, and our current food systems are not up to the challenge. While demand is ever-increasing\, resources are in decline. It is a vicious cycle that is further exacerbated by unsustainable agricultural practices and food systems that have negative effects on biodiversity\, the environment and our health. \nBut what has to change in order to achieve a more sustainable food system? \nA recent article by Prof. Robert Finger from the World Food System Center (WFSC) of ETH Zurich\, outlines the most important fields of action to make the food system more sustainable. These include avoiding waste\, increasing efficiency\, closing cycles and replacing and improving current practices. \nTechnological advancements will certainly help. For example\, precision fermentation needs 1\,700 times less land than even the most efficient agricultural means of producing protein available today. However\, food is deeply rooted in our cultures\, so change will be difficult to achieve. SUMMARY:Networking Event Series - Climate-Friendly Farming
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our Networking Event Series powered by Innosuisse! \nAgriculture is responsible for 10% of Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions and is a huge driver of environmental degradation and biodiversity loss. It is clear that the sector needs to be transformed. The challenge will be that\, if we want to feed a growing population and still reach our net zero targets\, agricultural production needs to be increased while greenhouse gas emissions are reduced. However\, there is good news too: Agriculture is one of the few sectors that has the potential to reduce its impacts on climate and nature\, while at the same time increasing its resilience to climate change and other environmental shocks. \n“Transforming the sector could substantially contribute to Europe’s net-zero and nature-positive targets. Achieving this will require working hand in hand with farmers\, strong collaboration and investments along the entire value chain\, as well as support from European policy-makers”\, as this article on the EU Carbon + Farming Coalition states. \nOn the consumer side\, more climate-friendly foods are demanded as well. In Switzerland\, Migros\, Denner and other retailers have already announced net zero strategies by 2050 and the Swiss Climate Strategy for Agriculture has set targets and strategies that need to be met.  Whilst Switzerland is innovating in many areas including agroforestry\, methane reduction methodologies and a switch from meat and dairy to plant-based diets is happening\, there is much more that needs to be done. \nAt this event\, we will discuss questions\, such as: \n\nWhat are the challenges and barriers to climate-friendly solutions in agriculture (shifts from use of pesticides and fossil-fueled methods\, alternatives to dairy and meat production and methods that support nature regeneration.)?\nWhat are the opportunities in transforming the agricultural sector?\nWhat exactly does Switzerland’s Climate Strategy for Agriculture say?\nHow do we balance carbon neutrality with other elements that should be included in sustainable food production?\nWhat are synergies with biodiversity protection\, social justice\, empowerment of local people or poverty remediation?\n\n– \nDie Landwirtschaft ist für 10 % der Treibhausgasemissionen in Europa verantwortlich und trägt erheblich zur Umweltzerstörung bei. Es ist klar\, dass der Sektor umgestaltet werden muss. Doch die Herausforderung besteht darin\, dass die landwirtschaftliche Produktion gesteigert und gleichzeitig die Treibhausgasemissionen reduziert werden müssen\, wenn wir eine wachsende Bevölkerung ernähren und dennoch unsere Netto-Null-Ziele erreichen wollen. \nEs gibt jedoch auch eine gute Nachricht: Die Landwirtschaft ist einer der wenigen Sektoren\, der das Potenzial hat\, seine Auswirkungen auf Klima und Natur zu verringern und gleichzeitig seine Widerstandsfähigkeit gegenüber dem Klimawandel und anderen Umweltschocks zu erhöhen. \n“Die Umgestaltung des Sektors könnte wesentlich dazu beitragen\, dass Europa seine Netto-Null- und Naturerhaltungsziele erreicht. Hierfür ist es notwendig\, Hand in Hand mit den Landwirten zu arbeiten\, eine starke Zusammenarbeit zu fördern und Investitionen entlang der gesamten Wertschöpfungskette zu tätigen sowie die Unterstützung der europäischen Politik zu erhalten”\, heisst es in diesem Artikel der EU Carbon + Farming Koalition (aus dem Englischen übersetzt). \nAuch auf der Verbraucherseite werden mehr klimafreundliche Lebensmittel gefordert. In der Schweiz haben Migros\, Denner und andere Einzelhändler bereits Netto-Null-Strategien bis 2050 angekündigt\, und die Schweizer Klimastrategie für die Landwirtschaft hat Ziele und Strategien festgelegt\, die es zu erfüllen gilt.  Obwohl die Schweiz in vielen Bereichen innovative Ansätze verfolgt\, z.B. in der Agroforstwirtschaft\, bei den Methoden zur Methanreduzierung und bei der Umstellung von Fleisch- und Milchprodukten auf eine pflanzliche Ernährung\, gibt es noch viel zu tun. \nIm Rahmen dieser Veranstaltung diskutieren wir Fragen wie zum Beispiel: \n\nWas sind die Herausforderungen und Hindernisse für klimafreundliche Lösungen in der Landwirtschaft (z.B. Einsatz von Pestiziden\, Milch- und Fleischproduktion)?\nWo liegen die Chancen für eine Transformation des Agrarsektors?\nWas sagt die Schweizer Klimastrategie für die Landwirtschaft genau aus?\nWie lässt sich Kohlenstoff reduzieren\, ohne andere Elemente einer nachhaltigen Lebensmittelproduktion zu ignorieren?\nWelche Synergien gibt es mit dem Schutz der Biodiversität\, der sozialen Gerechtigkeit\, der Stärkung der lokalen Bevölkerung oder der Armutsbekämpfung?
