SUMMARY:Thematic Event: Sustainable Energy System - Who Will Lead the Way?
DESCRIPTION:Technical innovation\, massive business model change and societal adaptation are inevitable if we are to build a sustainable energy system. But how do we get there? What steps should we take? And who will lead the way? We dive into this topic and take an interdisciplinary approach with our event partner\, the Energy Science Center of ETH Zurich\, and our host\, Siemens. \nEnergy demands are evolving fast. Nations are moving to build more self-reliance on their energy systems. We have an increasing demand for electricity and at the same time\, we have aggressive goals to cut carbon emissions. Energy infrastructure projects will require long-term investments\, so finance and governments are key to the solutions. \nThe only way to tackle the complex problem we face is through an interdisciplinary approach. Cutting-edge research is being done\, but what can we learn? What support is required? \nAt this event\, we will hear expert inputs by three keynote speakers from academia\, business and the public sector. After these inputs\, we will have the exclusive opportunity to dive deep into the topic by learning from eight doctoral students researching the hurdles and working on specific solutions for a sustainable energy system. \nJoin us to discuss the following questions – moderated by Christian Schaffner – and to learn from the doctoral students who are immersed in these topics: \n\nHow can energy policy support the speed of technical innovation?\nHow can green energy models be economically favorable?\nWhat is the latest research on biofuels\, semiconductor efficiency\, managing hydropower dams\, carbon capture and storage\, the future of transport?\nWhat are government and societal roles around the storage and transport of nuclear waste?\n\nWe are happy to announce that this event is hosted by Siemens in their state of the art Swiss Headquarters in Zug. The Siemens Campus is a great example of the interplay between new technological solutions and the energy efficiency and sustainability they bring with them. \nSpeaker inputs by: \n\nKristina Orehounig\, Head of Urban Energy Systems Laboratory at EMPA\nKaja Hollstein\, Head of Operations Services at Swissgrid\nIlonka Zapke\, R&D Strategy in Technology & Innovation at Siemens\n\nModerated Poster-Session with PhD students on their research. Including: \n\nArnau Aliana\nManuel Belanche\nLinda Brodnicke\nSudesh Dahal\nSusanne Rhein\nKatrin Sievert\nBessie Noll\nDabwiso Sakala\nFei Wu\n\nThis event is partly funded by Zurich-Basel Plant Science Center. \nMarie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA)\, Co-funding of Regional\, National\, and International Programmes (COFUND).

SUMMARY:Informal Drinks - The Road to Carbon-Free Energy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for these Informal Drinks after work on March 17th to discuss how we can shift to carbon-free energy! Electrification is critical to decarbonise various sectors. However\, it is not enough anymore for a company to claim that they use 100% renewable energy as that does not necessarily equate to carbon-free energy. Each hour of energy consumption must be matched by an hour of carbon-free energy generation. \nWe are not on track to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7)\, which demands access to affordable\, reliable\, sustainable and modern energy for all by 2030. The United Nations have set an ambitious goal with their 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact and have put together a set of principles and actions that stakeholders across the energy ecosystem can commit to in order to drive systemic change. \nSo how do we embrace the rapidly developing technologies and move away from our reliance on fossil fuels? How do we use transition technologies such as nuclear and natural gas and how do we build the needed renewable energy infrastructure required? \nThis topic is very much in the media and public conscience but what is the latest research and how can industries and individuals work together to build the carbon-free future we all aim for. To achieve net-zero emissions across the global economy by 2050\, electricity must decarbonize even faster\, while becoming the core of a just and accessible energy system. \nAt this event\, you will hear from Christian Schaffner\, Executive Director\, Energy Science Center (ESC) ETH Zürich to give you some food for thought. Afterwards\, you are invited to simply mingle and have a drink with us and the GreenBuzz community.
