SUMMARY:Scope 3 Kick Off Event - The inescapable giant in reaching net zero
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to kick off our Scope 3 Event Series with our Partner\, Siemens! \nWith our Scope 3 Event Series\, we aim to address the significant challenges companies face in achieving net zero along their entire value chain (Scope 3). In this first event\, we want to give a general overview of what Scope 3 emissions are\, discuss the challenges in tackling them\, and their importance in the bigger scheme of things to reach the global decarbonization targets. \nA company’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are distinguished between different categories\, or so-called “scopes” – Scope 1\, Scope 2 and Scope 3. While Scope 1 emissions are caused directly by a company through its operating activities\, Scope 2 emissions are generated indirectly through the purchase of electricity\, for example\, for cooling or heating buildings. Scope 3 emissions\, on the other hand\, are emissions that are not directly associated with the company but that the company is still indirectly responsible for\, up and down its value chain. And this is where it gets tricky! \nScope 3 emissions could\, for example\, stem from buying products from its suppliers\, from its products when customers use them or from the operations of a company’s investments and they are divided into 15 categories as laid out by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (pages 34-37). \nThese emissions are not only the most difficult to account for\, but also the most important to tackle. In terms of emissions\, Scope 3 is almost always where a company has the largest footprint. Only by reducing emissions along the entire value chain (up- and downstream)\, can a company truly achieve net zero emissions. \nBreak-out Discussions will be: \n\nWorking with suppliers\, especially SMEs\nHow to ensure data is reliable\nComplying with regulation\nCost – Who pays for the transition?\nBuy-in from Management and employees\n\n–

SUMMARY:Thematic Event: Science-Based Targets Initiative
DESCRIPTION:Launched in 2015\, the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) was one of the first frameworks for corporate emission reduction target setting in line with climate science\, an impactful tool to drive net zero ambitions. The SBTi was formed by the Carbon Disclosure Project\, the United Nations Global Compact\, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).\n\nThe Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi):\n\n“Defines and promotes best practice in emissions reductions and net-zero targets in line with climate science.\nProvides technical assistance and expert resources to companies who set science-based targets in line with the latest climate science.\nBrings together a team of experts to provide companies with independent assessment and validation of targets.\nThe SBTi is the lead partner of the Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign – an urgent call to action from a global coalition of UN agencies\, business and industry leaders\, mobilizing companies to set net-zero science-based targets in line with a 1.5°C future.”\n\nA commitment to the SBTi can bear many opportunities for companies\, such as bottom line savings\, regulatory resilience\, investor confidence\, competitive advantage\, innovation and more. Nearly 3\,500 companies from across all sectors have signed up for the SBTi worldwide\, over 80 big companies in Switzerland. As the initiative’s influence has grown\, so have questions about the accuracy of its ratings and the ongoing reporting\, other questions include… \n\nWhat are the goals of the SBTi\, how was it founded?\nWhat tracking is in place to ensure committed goals are reached?\nWhat happens after a company’s climate action plan is approved by the SBTi?\nAre there control or reviewprocesses in place? How is data on their progress collected?\nCan middle-sized or small companies comply?\nWhat should a company consider when signing up to the SBTi?

SUMMARY:Networking Event Series - Towards Net Zero
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our Networking Event Series powered by Innosuisse. \nThe latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has once again made it clear that we must act collectively now to prevent the worst consequences of climate change. As governments around the world introduce new regulations to reduce CO2 emissions\, businesses are expected to follow suit. They find themselves in a race against time to meet the ‘Net Zero by 2050’ target. The stakes could not be higher. By limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees\, it is understood that the most harmful effects of climate change may be mitigated. How well companies adapt to the new guidelines will be critical to reaching the 2050 goal. \nA recent study suggests that over 20% of the world’s largest public companies have committed to net zero. And the majority of those companies also have interim targets\, a published plan and a reporting mechanism in place for their commitments. However\, the study also indicates that the “net zero commitments assessed varied hugely in their quality and only 20% met the minimum set of robustness criteria\, or ‘starting line’\, as set out by the UN Race to Zero Campaign.” \nThe study leaves some open questions such as: Are the commitments enough? What can we learn from our past successes and failures? What are the greatest hurdles to overcome  to achieve net zero? What reporting standards can we align to? \nMany in our GreenBuzz community are striving towards the same goal of achieving net zero. At this event we will discuss: \n\nScience aligned targets\,\nfollowing a decarbonising strategy\,\nmeasuring and reporting on their progress.\n\nWe invite our speakers and audience to learn from each other\, share insights and make connections that can elevate the work that is being done to a speed that will meet our climate targets.  As a take away from this event\, you will have a clearer idea on tackling your net-zero goals.

SUMMARY:Informal Drinks - Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
DESCRIPTION:Carbon capture and storage (CCS) refers to a range of technologies that combat climate change by reducing the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2). The idea behind CCS is to capture the CO2 combustion of fossil fuels before it escapes into the atmosphere\, transporting it\, and eventually storing it. \nNew questions arise: What should/ will happen to the captured CO2? Can such technologies create a false sense of security in some people\, a deceptive way out of impending behavioral changes? Are CCS technologies facilitating greenwashing? \nJoin us for these Informal Drinks on November 4th to discuss these and more questions relating to carbon capture and storage technologies\, the opportunities connected to them but also their limitations. \nAt this event\, you will hear a short input by Liesbeth Deddens\, Product Marketing Manager at Climeworks to give you some food for thought. Afterwards\, you are invited to simply mingle and have a drink with us and the GreenBuzz community.
